Romanian Orthodox 2
The history of
the Romanian church is mottled with setbacks and struggles, yet shines with strength. Romania has
experienced suppression under the Ottoman Turkish rule, and in Transylvania, under Hungarian rule.
Throughout this time, the Romanian Orthodox church helped keep alive within that country a sense of
national identity. After WWII, Romania was once again controlled by an external source--the USSR. It
has not been until very recently, in the early 1990's, that the church has been released from state
control. This Romanian Orthodox Church is found in Romania.
