All Pentecostal Churches share the common belief of the spiritual gift of "speaking in tongues". The origin of spiritual gifts can be traced back to the day of Pentecost, as recorded in the Biblical book of Acts, when early Christians received the gifts of the Holy Spirit after the ascension of Jesus Christ. Modern Pentecostalism began in the early 1900s when members of the Holiness Churches (see Holiness Churches) received the gifts of tongues. In general Pentecostal Churches tend to be small gatherings in homes or rented spaces. The worship services are very emotional and spiritually powerful. The Pentecostal Church is perhaps the fastest growing church in North America with 1000s of new members being added every year! [BM] {UA}
