Brethren

The Brethren Church arose in Germany during the early 1700s. Persecuted in Germany, many fled to Pennsylvania in the 1720's. Much of Pennsylvania, as seen in this photograph, is rural, still being farmed by Brethren. Their beliefs and subsequent life style has similarities to the Mennonite Church. Like the Mennonite Church they adhere to adult baptism, refuse to swear oaths and will not serve as combatants in war. [BM] {VA}
