ORIGINS Only a very rough date can place the conception of Greek religion. It is known that when Greek-speaking peoples moved south into the peninsula, which we now call Greece, they brought with them the worship of Zeus, the supreme god. This population shift occurred in the 2nd millennium BC. This religion was assimilated with that of the people who already occupied the peninsula, as well as the belief of the Minoan, who lived on the island of Crete, located just off of the Greek peninsula. From this assimilation arose the epic tales which make Greek religion famous. This sculpture features the abduction of Persephone by Pluto, king of Hades. [BM] {VA}
