Within African tribes the religious positions of medicine men and witch doctors were recognized positions of leadership. The medicine men were often considered priests, yet their duties were that of healing. Quite different from the Western view of the crazy African witch doctor. In actuality they had discovered through the study of local botany many effective cures. Many of the skills and methods used do not conform to Western science.
