Rome - Monuments
Monuments such as the Trajan Column were erected to commemorate victories.
In an upward spiral narrative relief, it depicts Trajan's Dacian campaigns.
Originally it contained the urn and ashes of the emperor with his statue on top,
but it has been replaced with a statue of St.Peter.
For the Romans, art and politics were intimately connected.
Monuments that recognised public service, and buildings that met public needs, form the core of early Roman art.
