In 1796AD:

• George Washington declined to serve as president for a third term.
• John Adams was elected as the 2nd U.S. president; Jefferson became vice-president.
• Tennessee became the 16th state of the Union.
• Gilbert Stuart painted a portrait of Washington (used later on the dollar bill).
