Western Sahara's independence ended with a military coup in 1978 which brought pro-Soviet leftists to power. In 1979, Soviet troops invaded to put down widespread revolts. In 1988, the Soviet Union began withdrawing its troops, completing the withdrawal in February, 1989. Since the Soviet withdrawal, Western Sahara has been subject to constant fighting for control of the government. [NS] {UA}
