Since independence there has been political unrest in Togo. The first Prime Minister was
assassinated in 1963. His predecessor was overthrown by army officers led by Lt.Col. Eyadema. Eyadema was named
president. In 1990 democratic reforms saw the election of new Prime Minister Koffingoh. In 1992 Eyadema resumed
the presidency. Eyadema has refused multiparty democracy. Violence & public pressure caused the ousting of both men.
In 1994 a new Prime Minister was elected.
