Japan occupied Siam briefly in 1941. By 1942 a nominal alliance had been established between Siam & Japan. Following WWII Siam experienced some political unrest. In 1950 King Phumiphon introduced a reformist & pro-Western policy. Since WWII Thai politics have been dominated by an oligarchy of military officers & a group of civilians with military ties. Many foreign countries have invested in Thailand & through industrialization this nation has one of Asia's fastest growing economies. [BM] {UA}
