In 1949 after considerable unrest in mainland China some 2 million Nationalist soliders, government officials & civilian sympathizers fled to Taiwan. China was under communist control & the government officials finding retreat in Taiwan claimed to be the relocated Republic of China--the legitimate government of China, free from Communistcontrol. Taiwan has remained politically stable & economically strong under the control of the Nationalist government. [BM] {UA}
