In 1944 Syria became fully independent. The early years of Syrian independence saw an exodus of both Jews & Christians. Syrian politics are dominated by an Arab majority. Much unrest & violence has passed between Syria & Israel, with special interest in the Golan Heights, sandwiched between the nations. Since the 1980's the Syrian govenment has been implicated in international terrorism in support of other Middle Eastern allies. In 1994 Syria participated in peace efforts in the Middle East.
