In 1983 the aggressive Nimeiri goverment attempted to institute Islamic law throughout Sudan. These actions resulted in riots & a state of emergency was declared in 1984. In 1985 severe drought & famine added to the fracture in Sudan. Nevertheless Muslim control was pushed through under the Bashir government which overthrew Niemeiri in a 1989 coup. In the 1990's relief support was suspended & the US has added the Sudan to its list of states that sponsor terrorism. [BM] {UA}
