Czechoslovakia remained bound together under communism. In 1989 the "Velvet Revolution" stamped out communism. Although together the Czechs & Slovaks fought against communism they were unable to share the common nation of Czechoslovakia. The nation was divided in half. In this divorced nation even the military & financial assests were fairly divided. In 1993 the Slovak Republic elected its first president. The birth of this new nation has been crippled by political unrest & economic instability. [BM] {UA}
