Recent Oman

In 1891 Oman became a British protectorate. British influence continued to grow, with the British aiding the sultanate in putting down desert rebellions in the 1950's. In 1971 the British withdrew from the Gulf & Oman was no longer under the protectorate. In 1970 the Sultan was overthrown by his son, Sultan Qaboos bin Said, who remains the leader of Oman today.
