Nicaragua has lost much in a civil war that ran throughout the 1980's. The U.S. has actively supported Contra rebels fighting the Sandanista regime. The Sandanista's were elected to power in 1984. In 1990 the Sandanista National Liberation Front lost the elections to the United Nicaragua Opposition. Nicaragua has experienced peace since this transfer of power. [BM] {UA}
