In 1953 Nepal received international attention as Sir Edmund Hillary & Tenzing Norgay climbed Mt. Everest. In 1990 antigovernment protests led to the death of 63 civilians. In response the king rewrote the constitution, introduced multi-party democracy & established human rights laws. In recent years tourism has had a positive impact on the economy & a negative impact on the ecology. All these changes must be seriously considered. [BM] {UA}
