In 1986 with the death of Marxist president Michel, the Chissano government came into power. This new govenment broke ties with the Eastern bloc & appealed for support from the West. Mozambique has a history of civil war which finally reached an end in 1992 when a cease-fire agreement was signed. Multiparty elections were held in 1994. Despite the wealth of mineral resources & rich agricultural lands Mozambique has suffered from years of drought. [BM] {UA}
