Through Stalin's intervention Macedonia was to become a communist republic. In 1946 Macedonia was renamed the Macedonian People's Republic. Macedonia was now under the rule of communist Yugoslavia. In 1991 Macedonia was finally able to declare independence from Yugoslavia. Macedonia, located in the hub of the Balkan peninsula, has had to fight to regain their cultural identity. [BM] {UA}
