Recent Lithuania

During the 19th century Lithuania fell into the hands of the Russians. Russia attempted to suffocate the Lithuanian culture; yet underground societies kept the Lithuanian religion, language & culture alive. Throughout this century the Lithuanians have struggled against communism. In 1990 Lithuania declared its independence. After a tumultuous year the Soviet Union accepted Lithuanian independence.
