In 1948, the liberated Italy under the Christian Democrat party wrote a constitution & became a member of NATO. Despite postwar poverty Italy had an economic rebirth. Since the 1970's the influence of this party has been in decline. Mafia assassinations & government corruption have left the Italian population disillusioned. There have been well over 50 coalition governments since the war. Italy continues to struggle both economically & politically. [BM] {UA}
