Under the leadership of Amilcar Cabral civilian rule was established in what is now Guinea-Bissau. In 1973, the same year that Cabral was assassinated Guinea-Bissau declared independence from Portugal. In 1980 a military coup overthrew the government. The country was run by a Revolutionary council until a new constitution was created in 1984. [BM] {UA}
