In 1932 a revolt occured as a result of the military dismissal of a reformist president. This revolt led to the massacre, La Matanza, of some 20,000 peasants. This period of unrest was followed by 40 years of political stability. Since the 1970's El Salvador has been in a state of unrest, experiencing assassinations, murders and violations of human rights.
