In 1967 the French territory on the Horn of Africa was named the Territory of the Afars and Issas. Within this region there was growing nationalism and a desire for independence. As a result the Republic of Djibouti emerged in 1977. Democratic elections resulted in the success of long time president Hassan Gouled Aptidon. [BM] {UA}
