Recent Croatia
Violence continued between the Serbs and Croats throughout the 20th century.
Suppressed at times by communism and dictatorship, the old ethnic hatred and
memory of "ethnic cleansing" would give rise to further unrest.
In 1991 the UN stepped in and Croatia became an independent nation.
The Serbs still occupy 25% of Croatian land and the unrest continues.
The country has been plagued by violence and assassinations ever since.
