After 1986, Belarussians formed many non-communist parties & challenged Communist authority. In 1990, they declared Belarussian to be the official language. Later that year, Belarus declared itself sovereign from the USSR. In December of 1991, Belarus helped to start talks on creating the Commonwealth of Independent States. [BA] {UA}
