History of Antigua & Barbuda
Columbus discovered Antigua for Spain in 1493, but it was settled by the British in 1632 for tobacco & sugar cultivation. Abolition of slavery in 1834 disrupted the islands' economy. Now tourism is the main business. Some residents of Barbuda are seeking independence from Antigua. [NS] {UA}
