In 1962, Algeria gained its independence from France. By 1967, Algeria had declared war on Israel, severed relations with the west & established close ties with the USSR. Algeria's first free elections were held on June 12, 1990 & the Islamic Salvation Front (ISF) won handily. The army wrested power from the ISF in 1991.
