In 1876 Henry Stanley explored the Congo River, establishing Belgian trading stations & establishing the Congo Free State. Stanley named himself king. Slavery was aboslished in the Congo Free State but the natives were greatly expoited & thousands died. In 1908 the Belgian Free State was transformed into the Belgian Congo in the hope of bringing humanitarian reform. [BM] {UA}
