Early in the 20th century French colonialism had been well established throughout Vietnam. Nationalists rose agianst French colonialism, resulting in violent resistence & unrest. In 1950 France reinstated Bao Dai as the king of Vietnam. At this time the republican government also claimed control of the nation. Tensions rose between these two rivals, resulting in the Vietnam war. [BM] {UA}
