Beginning in the 18th century the Ottoman Empire began to weaken. During WWI the Ottoman Empire had disintegrated, losing most of its non-Turkish possessions. In 1923 Turkey became a republic. The Turkish Republic was declared a multiethnic & secular state. Since independence Turkey has been directed by both civil & military governments. In recent years Turkey has struggled with growing Kurdish nationalism within their borders & violence by Muslim fundamentalists. [BM] {UA}
