In 1983 St. Kitts & Nevis were given independence from Britain. In 1990 the country was greatly damaged by Hurricane Hugo. The economy of these islands is heavily dependent on the export of sugar. The hurricane destroyed sugar cane plantations in turn affecting the welfare of the whole population. [BM] {UA}
