Between the 16th & 19th centuries the Portuguese, the Dutch & the British struggled for control of Sri Lanka. In 1833 Sri Lanka was incorporated into the British Crown colony of Ceylon. The British established tea, rubber & coconut plantations. Sri Lanka remained a British colony until 1948 when Ceylon became an independent member of the British Commonwealth. In 1972 Sri Lanka reached full independence & became the Republic of Sri Lanka. [BM] {UA}
