In 1946 greater power was given to the Senegalese when a territorial assembly was established. By 1958 Senegal achieved limited self-rule within the French Community of Nations. In 1960 French Sudan, which is now known as Mali, joined together with Senegal forming the Federation of Mali. Soon after Senegal seceded & declared itself the independent Republic of Senegal. Leopold Sedar Senghor became the first president of Senegal. [BM] {UA}
