Modern São Tomé &
Príncipe
As the sugar trade declined
slave-trade increased & the island became a major producer of coffee & cocoa. Production
of
cocoa continued through 1908 when São Tomé became the world's largest
producer. Slave trading also
continued into the 20th century despite the abolishment of
slavery by Portugal in 1876. Cruel labour
practises caused the death of hundreds of workers
as they fought against the dominant Portuguese in 1953.
