In 1544 the viceroyalty of Peru was established. Lima, Peru became the center of Spanish colonialism. Lima became the most powerful & wealthy city in the entire region. In 1821 Peru was liberated from royalist forces in the battles of Junin & Ayacucho. Since independence Peruvian government has changed hands many times. Peru's political unrest has resulted in a long history of economic instability. [BM] {UA}
