The small town of Asuncion grew in power until the politically elite citizens of Asuncion declared Paraguay independent in 1813. From 1813 to 1870 Paraguay remained stable under authoritarian rule. Throughout the 17th century Jesuit missionaries established many missions throughout southern Paraguay. There was considerable tension between the Jesuit missionaries & the elite of Asuncion.
