During WWI the Netherlands remained neutral. However, WWII left this country devasted. The royal family fled to England & many Jews were persecuted & the country terrorized. In 1945 when Holland was liberated, people celebrated on the streets. In the postwar years the Netherlands lost control of most of their empire, not the least of these in a horrific war in Indonesia. Indonesia was to finally gain independence in the year 1949. [BM] {UA}
