Modern Maldive Islands
In 1965 the Maldive Islands became an independent nation. In 1968 the region was recognized as a republic. Since the Maldive Islands have become independent they have encouraged tourism. Tourism now accounts for 10% of their gross national product. Windsurfing is a very popular sport on the Maldive Islands. [BM] {UA}
