Modern Malawi

In 1891 the Scottish missionary David Livingstone established the British-controlled Nyasaland Protectorate. In 1953 Nyasaland joined with Northern & Southern Rhodesia (Zambia & Zimbabwe) to become a federation. This federation began to organize an independence movement. In 1962 Nyasaland was granted self-governing status by Britain. In 1964 they received full independence & changed their name to the Democratic Republic of Malawi. [BM] {UA}
