Modern Lesotho
From 1823 to 1870 King
Moshoeshoe ruled Lesotho. During his reign much of the kingdom was lost through war with
South Africa. The king appealed to Queen Victoria. In response, Lesotho became a British
protectorate. Britain was to
govern all afairs in Lesotho until 1966 when independence was
granted.
This photograph, taken in 1969, several years after independence, captures a
female work crew building a road in Lesotho.
