Modern Iceland

Iceland declared independence in 1918, sharing a king with the Danish. During WWII Iceland was garrisoned by the British, followed by the Americans and finally occupied by the Germans. By the end of the war in 1944 Iceland declared itself a republic, rejecting the monarchy.
