During the 19th century Guinea-Bissau became a major Portuguese commercial center. With all this activity the Portuguese claimed administrative control over the territory and began to conquer the interior territory. By 1879 the region was known as Portuguese Guinea. In 1952 this territory became an overseas province of Portugal. [BM] {UA}
