Modern Guatemala
In 1838 Guatemala became a separate
country from Spain and Mexico, dissolving
the United Provinces. From 1851 to 1944 the
Liberal party dominated the
Guatemalan political scene. Soon after control would be gained
by Jacobo
Arbenz who was backed by Communist support. His rule ended in 1954 by a US-backed
coup.
In the Central Market colourful Guatemalan clothes make the scene look festive.
