Modern Fiji

In 1874 Fiji was annexed by the British and became a Crown Colony. Between 1879 and 1916 the British established sugar plantations. These plantations were run by Indian laborers. These laborers of Indian descent soon outnumbered the original inhabitants of Fiji, the Melanesian.
