After WWI, the League of Nations made Burundi a mandated territory & continued as a trusteeship until after WWII. Burundi became independent on July 1, 1962 & was ruled as a monarchy under the traditional Mwani. The Hutu & Tutsi continued to fight amongst themselves, killing at least 160,000 people. [BA] {UA}
