Modern Botswana
Botswana was inhabited by hunter-gatherers, farmers &
tribes with herds of livestock. Early in the 19th century
missionaries from South Africa
entered the region of Botswana. Late in the 19th century the native people fought
off
Afrikaners migrating from South Africa. In response the British government established a
protectorate in 1886. At that
time Botswana was known as Bechuanaland.
