This region traded hands many times until 1960 when independence was granted from French rule. In 1972, Mathieu Kerekou came to power & established a Marxist regime, nationalizing large private businesses & abolishing opposition parties. By 1989, the economy was terrible & most trade was through the black market. After 1990, Kerekou was defeated by Nicephore Soglo. [BA] {UA}
