Modern Barbados
Although the Spanish removed
almost all indigenous Arawaks by the 1500s,
Barbados was not claimed to be British until
1620.
At that time the economy was made up of tobacco, cotton & sugarcane,
harvested by
slaves until 1833.
The country remains relatively prosperous compared to other Caribbean
states.
However, recently declining tourism & low sugar production have caused problems.
