Medieval Taiwan
Prior to the 17th century
the island of Taiwan was inhabited by non-Chinese aboriginals. In the 17th century the
Portuguese arrived & established a trading station. The Portuguese named the island Ilha
Formosa, a name which
is still used on occasion. The Dutch also arrived during the 17th
century establishing Fort Zeelandia. The Dutch
controlled the island until the Chinese
pirate-patriot Koxinga drove them out.
